Wildcats Fifth After First Day of Regional Meet

5/24/17 - The track and field team is fifth after the first day of the Div. III regional meet in Tiffin and already have one state qualifier.  The team has eight points after day one of the meet with Arlington leading the team score race with 13 points.  The state qualifier for the Wildcats is junior Annalicia Torres in the shot put where she finished fourth (the top four in regional event finals earn a state meet berth) with a best of 41-5.  In the only other final event the Wildcats had athletes competing in junior Carly Rothert was seventh and senior Liz Koenig was eighth in the high jump.  Both girls cleared 5-0.  In preliminary events where the top eight advance to the finals on Friday, freshman Claire Rothert placed second in her heat and third overall in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.01 to advance to the Friday final.  Her time was two-tenths off the best prelim time.  The 800 relay foursome of senior Camryn Bench, senior Lily Rothert, Claire Rothert, and junior Emily Wegert placed third in their heat and fifth overall to advance to the finals with a time of 1:49.17, just over one-tenth of a second of the time of the fourth-place squad.  The 400 relay group of Bench, Koenig, Claire Rothert, and Wegert just missed qualifying for the final by just over three-tenths of a second placing  fourth in their heat and ninth overall running a time of 52.64.  Claire Rothert also just missed a berth in the 100 hurdle final placing fifth in her heat and tied for ninth overall running a time of 16.57, just .02 off the time of the eighth-place finisher.  The state meet will be held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the Ohio State University campus next week.  The shot put competition will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday (June 2).  Torres is making a return trip to the state meet after qualifying last year in the shot put and placing fifth.
