Wildcats Fall in Battle for Second-Place in NBC

1/12/17 - Varsity - The Wildcats (8-5 -5-3 NBC) battled from behind most of the game at Lake, a contest between the two teams tied for second place in the Northern Buckeye Conference, before losing in overtime by a score of 36-32.  Woodmore trailed after each of the first three quarters by slim margins - 7-4 after the first quarter, 13-10 at halftime, and 18-17 heading into the fourth quarter.  Woodmore tied the game at 20-all early in the fourth quarter on a three-point field goal from junior Hayley Freund with 6:47 left.  Two free throws from senior Lily Rothert with 2:36 left pulled the Wildcats within one point (25-24).  Two more Rothert free tosses with 1:54 left gave them their first lead in the game at 26-25.  After a Lake free throw evened the score with 1:22 left, Woodmore regained the lead as Freund hit a corner field goal for a 28-26 lead with 57.3 seconds left.  Lake evened the scored at 28 with a pair of free throws with 39.2 seconds left.  Woodmore held the ball for the last shot, but did not get a good look at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.  The two teams traded field goals early in the overtime.  A three-point field goal and a layup by Lake sandwiched around a Woodmore field goal gave Lake a 35-32 lead with 1:56 left.  The teams traded possessions from there but the only other points over the remainder of the game was a free throw by Lake with 13.5 seconds left to make it the final score.  Freund lead the Wildcats with 12 points while Rothert added eight points.  The Wildcats had six other players who scored two points. Junior varsity - Lake won each of the first three quarters to build a 35-26 advantage heading into the final stanza and defeated Woodmore by a 47-35 count.  Lake won the third quarter, 16-10, to build the nine point lead.  Sophomore Paige Schmeltz led Woodmore with seven points, junior Lauren Wolph and sophomore Maddie Thatcher added six points apiece.
