Wildcat Season Ends With Loss in Sectional Final

3/3/17 - The boys basketball team played even with Northern Buckeye Conference co-champion and top-seeded Genoa in their Div. III sectional final game at Oak Harbor High School for a half, but a a dry spell in the third quarter and early in the final stanza led to a 48-38 loss.  Genoa scored eight straight points in the opening quarter to open a 10-3 lead before Wildcat senior, Derek Wank, who led the team with 15 points, had a field goal and three-point field goal at the buzzer to pull WHS within 12-10 after the first eight minutes.  The second quarter was even and the two teams settled for a Genoa 22-19 lead at the break.  Woodmore scored the first field goal of the third quarter to pull as close as they had been since the opening seconds of the game, 22-21.  But, from there Genoa would score seven unanswered points to take a 29-21 lead with 5:04 left in the quarter and 12 of the last 14 points of the quarter to build a 34-23 lead after three quarters.  Neither team scored in the the final 2:44 of the third quarter.  When Genoa scored six of the first eight points of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats trailed 40-25.  After the teams traded baskets for the next four minutes, the Wildcats canned consecutive three-point field goals to pull within 45-36 with 42.7 seconds left, but that would be as close as they would get.  Junior Mitchell Miller added eight points and senior DJ Wellons and sophomore Drew Burner added five points each.  The Wildcats had only 14 field goals in the game, just nine two-point field goals.
