Wildcats Advance In State Tourney with Sectional Win

2/28/18 - Div. III Sectional - Anthony Wayne H.S. - Woodmore 51, Otsego 46.  The Wildcats turned up the defense in the third quarter and road that to the win to open state tournament play.  Woodmore scored eight of the last 13 points in the first quarter to lead 14-11.  Senior Mitchell Miller, who took game scoring honors with 23 points, scored nine points in the opening quarter.  An 11-4 run by the Wildcats over the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter gave them a 19-13 lead with 6:09 left in the second stanza.  Otsego would then close the quarter on a 7-2 run as the Wildcats led 21-20 at halftime.  Miller scored five more points in the second quarter to score 14 in the first half.  In the third quarter, the turning point of the game, Woodmore scored the first nine points of the frame to build a 30-20 lead at the 4:27 mark of the quarter.  Miller scored five of the points in the run.  After Otsego scored its only points of the quarter with 4:15 left on a field goal, the Wildcats scored the final four points to forge a 35-22 lead heading to the fourth quarter.  Woodmore outscored the Knights, 14-2 in the third quarter.  Otsego would close to 39-34 at the 3:14 mark of the fourth quarter on a 12-4 run.  But, after a Woodmore time out, the Wildcats would score the the next seven points to re-build the lead to 46-34 with 1:44 remaining.  Freshman Aaron Sandrock and junior Drew Burner had lay ups in the run while Miller closed the run with a three-pointer.  Burner added 11 points in the win while senior Kevin Paul scored six points, including four straight free throw in the final 1:22 of the game when Otsego was fouling to send the Wildcats to the line.  Woodmore was six-of-eight at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.  Junior Sam Barbee came off the bench to scored five points.  Both teams had 18 field goals in the game, five of those three-pointers.  Woodmore was 10-of-13 from the line while Otsego was five-of-eight.  Woodmore improves to 17-6 on the season and will play Eastwood on Friday night at 8 p.m. back at Anthony Wayne High School.
