Wildcats Advance in State Tournament With Win Over Gibsonburg

3/1/17 - The Wildcats (9-14) put together one of their most complete games of the season and road a 13-4 run to start the second quarter to a 65-53 win over Gibsonburg in the Div. III sectional semifinal game at Oak Harbor High School.  Woodmore led from start to finish in the game after starting the contest scoring nine of the first 11 points.  From that point, Gibsonburg outscored the Wildcats, 13-7, the rest of the quarter and Woodmore had to settle for a 16-15 lead after the first eight minutes.  After Woodmore opened the second quarter with the 13-4 run to build a 29-19 lead with 4:12 left, the Wildcats also closed the quarter stongly to 
lead 38-24 at halftime.  Woodmore held its biggest lead of 18 points at 54-36 with 1:16 left in the third quarter and led 54-39 heading into the final stanza.  Woodmore still led by 18 points early in the fourth quarter (60-42) before Gibsonburg scored eight straight points to pull within 60-50 with 56.9 seconds left.  But, the Wildcats scored the next five points to put an end to the Golden Bears run and earn the tournament victory.  Senior Derek Wank led the way for the Wildcats with 17 points while senior Mikey Blausey and junior Mitchell Miller both chipped in with 12 points apiece.  Three players scored seven points - seniors DJ Wellons, JT Atkin and junior Kevin Paul.  The Wildcats advance to play top-seeded Genoa, the Northern Buckeye Conference co-champion and #1 seed in the 11-team district on Friday at 8 p.m. back at Oak Harbor High School.
