Three Named to All-League Team

5/23/17 - The Wildcats had three players earn a spot on the Northern Buckeye Conference all-league team as chosen by the league coaches.  Senior JT Atkin was a first team selection in the outfield.  Atkin is hitting .386 this season, to lead the team, with one double, one triple, 10 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.  Senior Austin Berkel and junior Donovan Reyes each were second team selections.  Berkel was selected as a pitcher where he is 4-3 this season with a 1.33 ERA in 58.0 innings pitched.  Berkel has allowed just 39 hits and has 46 strikeouts.  He has made 11 appearances with seven of those starts.  Reyes was the second-team catcher.  He is hitting .316 with five doubles and one triple to go along with 10 RBI and four runs scored.

Junior Varsity: Woodmore, 9-7
The Wildcats (8-13-1, 6-6 NBC) evened their league record with the win at home over first-place Lake.  Two Woodmore errors and two Lake hits led to a pair of runs for the Flyers in the first inning.  Woodmore scored one in the bottom of the frame an an RBI single by senior Mason Beachler with two outs that plated senior DJ Wellons who had reached on an error.  Lake scored one run in the third on two singles and an error.  Woodmore scored the final runs of the game in the bottom of the third - one run scoring on an error, one run on a ground out from senior Donovan Reyes, and the winning run on a passed ball after junior Hunter Stevenson singled and raced around to third on a ground out.  Senior Austin Berkel went the distance on the mound for the Wildcats allowing four hits and no earned runs.  He struck out six and walked three in throwing 98 pitches.  Beachler had three hits, and Atkin two in the game.

Junior Varsity: Woodmore, 13-5
The Wildcats (7-13-1, 5-6 NBC) posted its seventh win of the season, but it took eight innings.  Woodmore scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 2-all.  In the bottom of the eighth, junior Donovan Reyes led off with a triple to right field and junior Ian Cook followed with a single to center field to drive home Reyes with the game-winner.  Elmwood scored its two runs in the fourth inning on a walk, sacrifice, single, and consecutive sacrifices which each scored a run.  Woodmore got one run back in the fourth when senior Mason Beachler drew a lead-off walk.  He then stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch.  Woodmore tied the score in the fifth when senior DJ Wellons reached on a hit batter with one out.  He was sacrificed to second by senior JT Atkin, moved to third on an error, and scored on a passed ball.  Elmwood was retired in order in the sixth and seventh innings.  Woodmore had one batter reach in the sixth and seventh, but could not push across a run.  Elmwood had a lead-off single in the eighth inning wiped out in a caught stealing by Woodmore catcher, Reyes.  Senior Brandon Cowell started and went 4.0 innings allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out four.  Senior Austin Berkel tossed 2.2 innings striking out three while not allowing a hit.  And, Wellons pitched the final 1.1 innings to get the win.  He allowed just one hit.  Wellons, Atkin,  and junior Hunter Stevenson had the other Woodmore hits.

Wildcats Lose in Last At-Bat in League Play

Junior Varsity: Woodmore, 9-5
The Wildcats (6-13-1, 4-6 NBC) took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning at Rossford in a Northern Buckeye Conference game.  But, the home team plated two runs on a walk, stolen base, single, and single that drove in both runs.  Woodmore broke on top in the first inning on a double by senior DJ Wellons and an RBI single from junior Donovan Reyes.  They doubled their lead with a run in the third inning when senior Mason Beachler was hit by a pitch, stole second, and Reyes singled him home.  Rossford scored three times in the third inning on a RBI triple, a single and a sacrifice fly.  In the fifth, Woodmore re-captured the lead with a pair of runs as Wellons tripled, Beachler singled him home, and Reyes followed with an RBI double to score Beachler.  Reyes was 4-for-4 in the game with three RBI while Wellons was 2-for-4.  Junior Hunter Stevenson went the distance on the mound allowing seven hits and five earned runs.  He struck out two and walked three.

Wildcats Lose Sectional Final to NBC Foe Lake

The Wildcats were no match for top-seeded Lake in the Div. III sectional final hosted by Lake.  The Wildcats tied the game at two in the top of third when they made their only real offensive surge.  With one out, junior Derrick Berkel singled, senior Austin Berkel followed with an infield single and Woodmore had runners on first and second.  Senior DJ Wellons followed with a double up the right field alley scoring both runners.  Woodmore was retired in order in three of the other five innings and had four players bat in the other two innings.  Woodmore struck out 10 times.  Senior Brandon Cowell started and pitched three innings allowing six hits, six runs (only 1 earned run) while striking out two and walking two.

Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Equal Sectional Win for Wildcats

The Woodmore baseball team rode the right arm of senior Austin Berkel while scratching out a couple runs to back him up in earning a 3-0 win at Genoa in their first Div. III sectional game.  With the win, the Wildcats advance to the sectional final at Lake on Friday at 5 p.m. Lake is the top seeded team in the district.  Woodmore, the #10 seed in the district, twice losers to 7th-seeded Genoa during the regular season, rode the complete-game, 94-pitch gem that Berkel threw.  Berkel struck out five and walked one allowing just three hits.  Berkel retired the side in order in five innings and faced just four batters in the second and third innings. In two of the innings he retired the side in order, he picked off a runner at first base.  Genoa did not have a runner advance past second in the game.  Meanwhile, the offense scored in the fourth and seventh innings.  In the fourth, senior Mason Beachler led off by drawing a walk.  Beachler stole second and after a line out, junior Kevin Paul walked. Junior Donovan Reyes then singled, but Beachler was caught at third rounding the base to far for the second out.  Paul and Reyes moved up one base on a passed ball and Paul scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch.  In the seventh, junior Derrick Berkel led off reaching on an error, going to second on the error.  After a strike out, senior DJ Wellons singled Berkel to third.  Wellons then stole second and moved to third when Berkel scored on a wild pitch.  Senior JT Atkin then grounded out with Wellons scoring on the play.  Woodmore had some other opportunities to score.  In the second, they had runners on first and second with two outs and didn't score.  In the fifth, the Wildcats got the first two batters on, but failed to score.  They also had two players aboard in the sixth with two outs.  Reyes was 2-for-3 at the plate and junior Hunter Stevenson was 2-for-2.

Wildcats Drop League Road Contest

Errors proved to be the difference in the road loss to Genoa as the Wildcats (5-11-1, 4-5 NBC) were guilty of four miscues in the sixth inning when Genoa turned a 2-2 game into the final score tallying three times.  Three hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch led to the two Genoa runs in the third inning.  Woodmore cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning as senior JT Arkin singled, senior DJ Wellons followed with a single and after Atkin stole third, he scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Zach Matwiejczyk.  The following inning the Wildcats tied the game as junior Kevin Paul led off with a single, senior Austin Berkel walked, and junior Hunter Stevenson singled in Paul.  Wellons had two hits for the Wildcats, one a triple.  Senior Brandon Cowell started and went 2.2 innings allowing four hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and three walks.  Berkel finished the final 3.1 innings allowing three hits and no earned runs with one strikeout.

Wildcats Win Second-Straight League Game

Woodmore scored all the runs they would need in the fourth inning, four runs, without hitting the ball out of the infield.  With one out, senior JT Atkin was at second after walking, Atkin advanced to third on a passed ball and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch.  Three straight walks then loaded the bases.  Junior Kevin Paul then drew a walk to force in the second run. Senior Austin Berkel's infield single plated the third run and junior Hunter Stevenson's infield out plated the final run.  Woodmore's other run scored in the fifth inning as Paul walked, was sacrificed to second, went to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch.  Two walks, an error and a fielder's choice netted Elmwood its only runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Senior Brandon Cowell went the distance on the mound for the Wildcats allowing seven hits, no earned runs, while striking out five and walking five while making only 93 pitches.  Junior Donovan Reyes had the other Wildcat hit, a single in the fifth inning.
