Five Earn All-League Honors

5/21/18 - Five Woodmore players earn spots on the Northern Buckeye Conference all-league team recently selected by the league coaches.  Senior Donovan Reyes was a first-team selection at catcher after leading the team with a .448 batting average.  He had a team-high nine doubles and 23 RBI while drawing 14 walks and striking out only six times.  Reyes also pitched 29.1 innings, second-most on the team, with a 2.86 ERA and 21 strikeouts.  Reyes had a 1-2 record.  Senior pitcher Derrick Berkel was a second-team selection after tossing a team-high 47.2 innings with a 2.06 ERA.  Berkel had 69 strikeouts for the season and only eight walks.  He had a 3-5 record.  At the plate, Berkel hit .240 with four doubles and nine RBI.  Senior Mitchell Miller was the second team shortstop.  Miller hit .347 with 11 RBI and 19 runs scored, the team high.  Senior Hunter Stevenson was an honorable mention pick at the utility position.  Stevenson hit .275 with seven doubles and 17 RBI.  Stevenson also scored 16 runs. Stevenson threw 21.1 innings on the mound with a 2-3 record and a 2.63 ERA.  And, junior Taityn Rollins was an honorable mention all-league outfielder.  Rollins hit .291 with six doubles and 15 RBI.  He also tied for the team lead with two triples.  Rollins pitched 19.2 innings this season with a 2.49 ERA and a 1-1 record.

Wildcats Drop Season Finale

The Wildcats managed just two hits in losing the season finale.  Senior Donovan Reyes singled in the first inning with two outs to put runners on first and second, but they failed to score.  Woodmore had runners on first and second and one out in the fourth inning and were retired on a fly out and strikeout.  The other Woodmore hit came in the fifth inning by senior Mitchell Miller and Reyes followed by reaching on an error to give Woodmore runners on first and second with two outs but the inning ended on a fly out.  Woodmore used five different pitchers in the game.  Seven of Otsego's eight runs were earned.  Otsego had four doubles and a triple among its eight hits.  Woodmore ends the season with an 8-15 overall record and a 2-12 mark in Northern Buckeye Conference play.

Woodmore took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't hold on for the victory.  Otsego scored the winning runs in the seventh when they drew a walk to start the inning and a double put runners at second and third.  An error allowed the first run to score.  A ground out plated the second run.  A single put runners at first and third and another single plated the tying run.  Otsego then stroked a double for the game-winner.  Woodmore took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning with two of the runs scoring on an error and freshman DJ Melter tripled in the third run.  In the seventh, Woodmore took a 4-1 advantage scoring a run on a Melter single after freshman Mike Brzeczek had tripled.  Brzeczek started and worked into the seventh inning allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) with six strikeouts and five walks.  Sophomore Steven Carer faced the last four batters getting one out and allowing three hits and an earned run.  Melter had two hits and six other players each had one.  Woodmore left six runners stranded.

Varsity Loses Home Game

The Wildcats lost a pitcher's duel at home in the Northern Buckeye Conference game.  Woodmore managed just three hits in the game and scored its only run in the fifth inning as junior Taityn Rollins tripled to center field leading off the inning and senior Kevin Paul followed with a sacrifice fly to center field.  Lake scored two runs in the top of eighth on a two-out double that was followed by an RBI single.  Senior Derek Berkel pitched the complete game allowing seven hits and three earned runs with eight strikeouts and no walks.  Lake's pitcher recorded 12 strikeouts while walking one.  Freshman DJ Melter had a single in the fifth inning after Woodmore had plated its only run. Melter then advanced to second on an error and to third with one out on a passed ball.  But, Woodmore was retired on two strikeouts.  Paul had the other Woodmore hit, a single in the seventh inning with two outs.  Woodmore was retired in order in four of the eight innings.  Berkel retired the side in order in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings.  Other than scoring on a home run in the third inning, Berkel allowed only one other runner to reach third base until the eighth inning.

JV Lose at Lake

The Wildcats managed just three hits, one in the first six innings, in losing on the road in Northern Buckeye Conference play.  The Wildcats sent four batters to the plate in each of the first three innings and were retired in order in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings before getting something going in the seventh inning.  Freshman Hunter Allen led off by drawing a walk and advanced to second on a ground out.  Sophomore Brett Sandwisch then collected the second Woodmore hit, a single, to put runners on first and third.  Allen then scored on a fielding error and with the bases loaded and one out one run was plated on a single from freshman Zane Lopez.  But the next two batters were retired without Woodmore scoring again to end the game.  Freshman DJ Melter had the other Wildcat hit, a double.  Allen started on the mound for Woodmore and tossed 3.2 innings allowing six runs, four earned, on three hits while walking seven.  Melter then worked 1.2 innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with three walks.  Sophomore Steven Carter pitched the final inning allowing one hit.  Lake pitchers recorded 13 strikeouts.

Wildcats Drop Road League Game

Rossford scored eight unearned runs taking advantage of seven Woodmore errors as the Wildcats lost a Northern Buckeye Conference road game.  Woodmore opened the scoring with a single tally in the second inning as senior Derrick Berkel led off with a double and junior Taityn Rollins followed with a single to move Berkel to third and senior Kevin Paul singled in Berkel.  The next Wildcat batter in the inning walked to load the bases with no outs, but WHS was retired on a strike out, fly out, and ground out.  Rossford took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the inning on two hits, two walks, a hit batter and two Wildcat errors.  Rossford scored three runs in the third inning on a walk, error, hit by pitch, walk, and single.  Berkel and senior Owen Conner had RBI singles in the fifth to cut into the deficit, but Rossford wiped out the two runs scored by Woodmore with two of their own in the bottom of the frame.  Woodmore made it interesting with a five-run sixth to make it 10-8.  Senior Ian Cook had an RBI double to get the sixth inning going and senior Donovan Reyes stroked a two-run single later in the frame and Rollins' two-run double closed the scoring for Woodmore.  Rossford scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and Woodmore was retired in the seventh on a single sandwiched around a strike out, fielder's choice, and ground out.  Woodmore had a 14-8 edge in the game in hits as Reyes, senior Mitchell Miller, Berkel, Rollins, and Paul all had two hits.  Reyes and Rollins each had two RBI and four other players had single RBI.  Rollins started for the Wildcats and went 2.2 innings allowing two hits and eight runs (none of them earned) with one strikeout.  Conner then pitched 1.2 innings allowing two hits and two earned runs with one strikeout and Miller pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing four hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.  Woodmore stranded eight runners, Rossford 10.

Rossford scored in four different innings while Woodmore scored in just one frame in losing the Northern Buckeye Conference home game.  Freshman Mike Brzeczek singled in two runs in the sixth inning for Woodmore and freshman Brendan Bosh sent Brzeczek home with a sacrifice fly later in the inning to close to within a run, 4-3.  Rossford scored two runs in the seventh to open the lead back up on three hits, a walk and a hit batter.  Woodmore got two runners aboard with one out in the seventh, but were retired on a fielder's choice and ground out.  Freshman Hunter Allen and sophomore Brett Sandwisch each had two hits for the Wildcats.  Brzeczek started for the Wildcats going five innings allowing five hits, four runs (three earned), with five strikeouts and five walks.  Freshman Zach Hunt tossed the final two innings allowing three hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.  Woodmore had just two hits in the first five innings of the game.

Wildcats Lose Div. III Tournament Game After Suspension Yesterday

Woodmore left a runner at third, needing one run to tie, in two of its final three at-bats in losing the Div. III sectional game at home to Wynford.  The game was started on Wednesday (May 8) and suspended in the bottom of the fifth with Wynford winning 2-1.  When the game was resumed today, Woodmore had a runner on third and two outs in the fifth.  Woodmore was retired on a ground out to end the threat.  After Wynford got two runners aboard in the sixth inning and failed to score, Woodmore got a runner to third base with two outs and were retired on a ground out.  After holding Wynford off the board in the top of the seventh, senior Zach Matwiejczyk reached leading off after being hit by a pitch.  But, an infield pop out, a fly out to right field and a ground out ended the game.  Woodmore had two of its four hits in the game in the first inning on Wednesday to plate their only run and tie the score.  Senior Ian Cook, who had two of the four Wildcat hits, led off with a double and senior Hunter Stevenson hit the first pitch he saw to left field for an RBI single.  Woodmore drew two walks with two outs in the second inning, but were retired on a pop out.  Woodmore had one runner aboard in the third and freshman DJ Melter singled with two outs in the fourth, but the Wildcats could not push across the equalizing run.  Cook singled to lead off the fifth inning and was eventually stranded at third when the game was resumed today.  Both teams left eight runners stranded.  Senior Derrick Berkel started on Wednesday and pitched the five innings before the suspension of play.  Berkel yielded six hits and two earned runs while striking out 11.  Senior Donovan Reyes pitched the two innings after the game was resumed today and did not allow a run on two hits while striking out one.  Wynford scored in the first inning when the first three batters all singled.  Wynford pushed across what proved to be the winning run in the third on a one-out double and then an RBI two-out double.  

Sectional Game Suspended

The Div. III sectional semifinal game was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning with Wynford leading, 2-1, and Woodmore batting in the bottom of the fifth with a runner at second base, two outs, and senior Donovan Reyes at bat.  The game will resumed at 5 p.m on Thursday (May 10).

Woodmore Loses Road NBC Game

Woodmore allowed just three runs but that was enough in a Northern Buckeye Conference loss on the road as the Wildcats failed to score at Genoa.  Woodmore had two runners aboard with two outs in both the first and fifth innings and they had two runners on with one out in the seventh inning but the game ended on a sacrifice and ground out.  One of the Wildcats who reached base in the seventh advance to third base, the only runner Woodmore advanced as far as third in the game.  Senior Ian Cook had two of the five Woodmore hits.  Senior Hunter Stevenson started and went three innings allwoing three hits and one unearned run.  Junior Taityn Rollins pitched two innings allowing four hits and two earned runs and senior Mitchell Miller pitched the sixth inning.  Woodmore struck out 11 times in the game and left eight runners on.

In a game that featured 22 strikeouts between the two teams, there were also 10 walks and three hits batters.  Freshman Hunter Allen started and pitched 4.1 innings and he did not allow a hit, but allowed four runs (one earned) while striking out nine and walking five.  Freshman Mike Brzeczek tossed the last 2.2 innings allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts.  Woodmore scored one run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Allen.  Woodmore scored one run in the fifth on an error and the other run was forced in when sophomore Jeremy Tingley drew a bases-loaded walk.  Allen had a ground out in the sixth inning that plated the Wildcat run.  Woodmore stranded 10 runners in the game.
